Near-Gem 1913 Matte Proof Double Eagle

1913 $20 PR64 NGC. The 1913 proof double eagle continued a trend that began with the 1912, i.e., lower mintage coupled with a higher rate of survivors. Only 58 proofs were struck of the 1913, but the attrition rate is lower as probably 35 to 40 individual pieces survive today. One possible interpretation of this lower mintage/lower attrition rate is that the matte proofing process continued to be unpopular with collectors overall (thus the low mintage of only 58 pieces). However, of the few gold collectors who assembled proof sets each year, a higher percentage understood and could differentiate a matte proof from a business strike. Therefore a larger number of coins were set aside as a percentage of the total mintage.
It is also interesting to note that of the number of survivors, the majority of proofs from this year are clustered in the PR64-67 grade range, with a sizeable number of PR67 coins known, as well as a couple of PR68s. This clustering of known examples again reinforces the theory that a larger percentage of the (admittedly small) number of collectors in 1913 understood and appreciated the matte proofing process.
As a rule, 1913 proof twenties are darker than in previous years, although not as deep in color as the 1908. They are usually seen with "brownish khaki" coloration, as seen on this piece. The grade of this coin is derived from a number of shiny spots seen over the highpoints of the design on each side. Magnification reveals very few actual contact marks. A rare opportunity to acquire this low mintage date in a pleasing and more affordable grade.
