    Description

    Outstanding Gem 1914 Proof Twenty

1914 PR 65 NGC. Ex: Trompeter. Only 70 proof double eagles were minted in 1914, and probably even fewer were distributed, this being the sunset era of matte proof coinage. The estimate of the the number of survivors has varied considerably from a low of 10-15 pieces to 20-25 coins (Akers) with Akers having tracked 14 proofs in major gold auctions over the decades. We believe that somewhere between 20 and 33 examples exist today in all grades.
Breen states that 1914 proofs have a "coarse sandblast finish," and indeed this coin has that appearance. The surfaces show no marks or shiny spots that could be considered distracting, and as far as pedigree identifiers are concerned the only one we see is a very light, kidney-shaped alloy stain across a couple of rays of the sun on the left side of the reverse. A splendid proof and undoubtedly one of the finest pieces known. Population: 6 in 65, 6 finer (7/98). (NGC ID# 26H3, PCGS# 9211)

    Weight: 33.44 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
