    Description

Seldom-Seen Proof 1915 Proof Double Eagle

1915 PR 65 NGC. Ex: Trompeter. In this final year of production of the matte proofing process, only 50 proof double eagles were struck. The 1915 has long been held in high regard by specialists and it may well be the rarest issue among the eight years proofs were coined. Breen estimated that possibly fewer than 12 proofs survive while Akers placed the number extant between 20 and 25 coins. We tend to agree with this higher estimate and would place the upper end at no more than 30 pieces.
The surfaces of this gem have an identical texture to the 1914 but are noticeably lighter in hue with more of a yellow-gold caste. The most obvious identifier for pedigree purposes is a tiny spot in the area of the elbow on Liberty's extended arm. Population: 1 in 65, only 1 finer (7/98).

    Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26H4, PCGS# 9212)

    Weight: 33.44 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
