1837 No Stars Seated Dime, PR64
    Rare Early-Date Proof
    Important Two-Year Design Type

1837 10C No Stars PR64 PCGS. CAC. Large Date. Mint Engraver William Kneass began the process of new designs for U.S. coins to replace the Capped Bust series, but his work was cut short when he suffered a stroke. Christian Gobrecht took over the project, and with the assistance of renowned artists Thomas Sully and Titian Peale, the new design for Seated Liberty coinage evolved. Both Capped Bust and Seated Liberty dimes were coined in 1837.

The Seated Liberty motif is a favorite with collectors -- a model of simplicity and purity of design. Only the 1837 and 1838-O dimes display Gobrecht's original vision of the design and represent an important two-year type. In 1838, the Philadelphia Mint added stars to the obverse margin, first as hand-punched small stars into the die, followed by larger stars later in the year. Later, in 1840 drapery was added to Liberty's elbow, the shield was placed upright, and Liberty gained some weight. A larger reverse legend and a revised wreath further distanced the design from Gobrecht's initial artistic intent.

The current boldly struck example shows a wonderful mottled patina of blue, reddish-umber, and fuscia pink. The depth of the mirrors is obvious when viewed at the proper angle. A few stray, delicate lines are hidden in the toning and account for the near-Gem grade. Just 30 proofs is the estimated mintage, although the PCGS-NGC reports are inflated by resubmissions. Population: 10 in 64, 4 finer (9/14).
