Description

    1848 Seated Dime, PR66 ★
    Single Finest Certified

1848 10C PR66 ★ NGC. CAC. The mintage of proof 1848 Seated Liberty dimes was unrecorded, as such coins were not offered commercially until 1858. These coins were referred to as "specimen" pieces at the time, and only the occasional example was struck by special order for some visiting dignitary, or to commemorate an important event. Writing in 1988, Walter Breen estimated eight coins surviving, including some impaired specimens. PCGS has currently certified only four pieces, none finer than PR65, but the CoinFacts site estimates the surviving population at 10 examples in all proof grades. Meanwhile, NGC has graded 10 coins total, with two in PR66, and this coin, the finest known, at PR66 (8/12). It is likely that the NGC total includes some duplicate submissions.
The present coin is a spectacular Premium Gem with razor-sharp definition on all design elements. All star centrils are complete, Liberty's foot shows separation from the sandal, and the ribbon bow is strongly impressed on the reverse. The 1 in the date shows signs of recutting, and the date slopes slightly down. The silver center yields to iridescent shades of champagne-gold and cobalt-blue on the obverse, while the reverse is lighter, with less blue. The pristine surfaces are brightly reflective, and the eye appeal is outstanding. This combination of rarity, highest available quality, and tremendous visual appeal is seldom encountered.
