Description
PR66 1853 Arrows Dime
Likely Sole Finest Known
1853 10C Arrows PR66 NGC. We last handled this piece in the
first part of Phil Kaufman's amazing run of proof Seated coinage.
The Kaufman coin, certified PR66 by NGC, is either the finest known
1853 Arrows proof dime or tied for finest known (see below). The
exceptional mirrors and amazing eye appeal make this piece a treat
for the connoisseur, and the first-year Arrows design adds to its
cachet among type collectors. Walter Breen put an estimate of five
proofs struck for the 1853 Arrows dimes; no proofs of the No Arrows
design are reported. The certified populations are rather mysterious for this issue; NGC lists a total of six grading events for the issue, including three in PR66 (almost certainly duplications), one in PR65, and two in PR63. PCGS records a single example in PR61. Despite these seven submissions, we are aware of no auctions of another 1853 Arrows proof dime since the previous offering of the Kaufman sale.
We disagree with the belief of some numismatists that the 1853 proofs are "unintentional" pieces struck from dies that were resurfaced and polished to remove clash marks. Muted clash marks are present near Liberty's right leg and drapery, and inside the right branch of the wreath. Die resurfacing will remove these clash marks and other die defects, but an unavoidable consequence is the removal of shallow design elements. Careful observation of this proof shows complete design elements on each side, entirely ruling out the possibility of die resurfacing.
Both sides of this boldly struck piece are sharp and complete. The mirrored fields are full and deep beneath bright champagne color with splashes of iridescent toning on both sides.
