Description

Attractive 1855 Arrows Dime, PR65

1855 10C Arrows PR65 NGC. Breen-3290. Breen says: "Obvious double date. Proof only. Very rare." First punched too far to the right then corrected. The number of 1855 proof dimes struck is unknown, but must have been extremely small. Breen writes in his Proof encyclopedia that: "At most a couple of dozen survive, perhaps less." NGC/PCGS population data are more in line with Breen's contention, as the two services have graded 18 pieces (a number of which are likely resubmissions).
Medium intensity reddish-gold patina dominates both sides of this Gem proof, accented with splashes of electric-blue at the borders. The design elements are sharply struck, save for minor weakness in the leaves of the upper right part of the wreath. A few minuscule marks do not detract from the great overall eye appeal. Census: 2 in 65, 0 finer (8/09).
