Very Rare Proof 1855 Dime

1855 Arrows PR 64 PCGS. Of the greatest rarity, this is the first proof 1855 dime we have handled in at least five years. The date plainly shows doubling on all the digits, a diagnostic for all proofs. In addition, the fields are deeply reflective and the devices intricately detailed. Breen estimates that "at most a couple of dozen survive." We believe that to be an overly optimistic estimate, as the combined staffs of both major services have only registered 14 appearances, with perhaps a third or perhaps even a half of those being duplicate submissions. We estimate that perhaps only a dozen or so have actually survived of this issue. The surfaces are covered in a smoky gray-blue patina, but the coloration is not oppressive as the fields are so highly reflective that they tend to lighten the coin by their mirrored flash. A rarely offered opportunity for the advanced type specialist. Population: 5 in 64, none are finer (10/96).
