Description

1856 Seated Dime, PR65
Rare, Only 30 to 40 Proofs Known

1856 10C PR65 NGC. F-101, High R.6. The proof 1856 Seated dime is rare in all grades and underrated as such. The mintage is unknown, but as few as 30 to 40 coins are extant. The combined NGC and PCGS certified population of 48 coins is undoubtedly inflated by resubmissions. In Gem or finer condition, this issue is exceedingly rare.

This fully rendered and beautifully mirrored example is a highlight of this session. Our archives show only three previous offerings of this issue in Gem condition out of just 25 appearances of the date overall. This piece shows gleaming sun-gold toning on the obverse with tinges of russet and amber around the borders. The reverse shows more traditional hues of violet and blue in the center with lighter mint-gold around the margins. A few stray lines do not detract. Census: 4 in 65, 2 finer (6/15).
