Description

1856 With Stars Dime, PR66
Ex: Eliasberg, Only One Graded Finer

1856 10C PR66 NGC. The mintage figure for the 1856 proof Seated Liberty dime is unrecorded, but experts estimate only 35-45 specimens survive today in all grades. A search of auction records reveals only four prior appearances of the 1856 proof dime in Premium Gem condition over the last two decades, with a single offering of a finer coin in PR67. The fabulous Superb Gem in lot 1794 of the Milwaukee ANA Auction (Heritage, 8/2007) realized $29,900.
The present coin was once a highlight of the famous Eliasberg Collection, perhaps the most famous coin collection of all time, justly noted for its quality and completeness. This PR66 example is a worthy representative of that famous holding. Both sides exhibit satiny devices with deeply mirrored fields and sufficient contrast that a Cameo designation is deserved, although this piece is currently undesignated. The obverse has lovely gold, heather, and blue toning, while the reverse has a similar but lighter presentation. Minuscule marks on each side do little to prevent a strong grade assessment. Census: 2 in 66, 1 finer (2/11).
Ex: John G. Mills (S.H. and H. Chapman, 4/1904); John H. Clapp; Clapp Estate (1942); Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr.; Eliasberg Estate (Bowers and Merena, 5/1996), lot 1152.
