Description
1856 Doubled Die Dime, PR67
1856 10C Small Date Dime PR67 NGC. Ex: P. Kaufman. Perhaps as many as 100 proof 1856 dimes were coined with 35 to 50 survivors, almost all in low numerical grades or impaired. Unlike the majority, the Kaufman proof is a Superb Gem that is exceeded by just one coin certified by NGC.All known proof 1856 dimes have a small date with a slanting 5, although this logotype also exists on business strikes. The obverse die is doubled with the doubling plainest among the lower skirt details and at LIBERTY and the shield. It is believed that all 1856 proof dimes were coined from this obverse die, with examination of many or all survivors necessary for confirmation.
Superb quality and extraordinary eye appeal are the hallmarks of this remarkable coin. The fields are deep with the mirrored surface shining brightly through vivid sea-green and magenta toning. The devices have full mint frost, an impeccable cameo proof, although not so designated. Census: 1 in 67, 1 finer (6/07).
