Description

Delightful 1856 Small Date Dime, PR64

1856 10C Small Date PR64 NGC. Ex: Richmond Collection. Clear evidence of obverse die doubling is visible on the shield and lower skirt lines, and it is believed that all of the 35 to 50 survivors are from this obverse die, indicating that it was the only obverse die used for all 1856 proof dimes. The reverse die is well made with no unusual characteristics. A vibrant near-Gem, this beauty has a hint of cameo contrast with lovely blue and lilac toning over deeply mirrored fields. Census: 9 in 64, 6 finer (2/09).
Ex: Richmond Collection (David Lawrence, 3/2005), lot 1248.
