Near-Gem Proof 1856 Small Date Dime
Fully Struck and Richly Toned

1856 10C Small Date PR64 PCGS. CAC. The Small Date 1856 dime has a slanted or italic 5 in the date, while the scarcer Large Date much more nearly fills the exergue beneath Liberty's rock and has an upright 5. The proofs are all struck from the Small Date dies, of which perhaps three dozen survive today. This near-Gem shows boldly struck surfaces with copper-amber color prevailing against olive-sage accents in the fields. Die doubling shows most plainly on the lower rock and shield. Population: 7 in 64, 4 finer (12/12).
