Description

1856 PR 64 NGC. While it has been stated many times before, it still bears repeating that all pre-1858 proof coinage is rare and highly desirable. This piece was struck in a time when proofs were not made in large numbers and were sold to only a few local collectors who were well connected at the mint. This is a deeply reflective specimen that has wide, even borders, and displays pinpoint striking details. Lightly cleaned at one time, the surfaces are beginning to retone, taking on a light russet patina over each side. A special coin that is sure to see much interest at lot viewing. Population: 3 in 64, only 1 finer.
