Description

1857 Seated Dime, PR64 Cameo
Few Examples Survive So Fine

1857 10C PR64 Cameo PCGS. F-101, R.6. Only a single die marriage is known for this rare, early proof, and it is most easily identifiable by repunching on the flag of the 1 in the date. The Mint did not record the exact number of proof dimes produced in 1857, but current research suggests 45 to 60 proofs were struck. The present survivor combines a silver-gray reverse with a gold-tinged obverse. Appreciable contrast exists between the sharply defined devices and the shimmering, glassy fields. This near-Gem example is free of mentionable hairlines, with a tiny, comma-shaped strike-through (as produced) in the obverse exergue below the lower-left side of the 8 in the date. Population: 1 in 64 Cameo, 3 finer (4/18).
Ex: Pittsburgh Signature (Heritage, 8/2004), lot 5682, which realized $4,312.50.
