Description
Scarce 1857 Seated Dime PR64
1857 10C PR64 PCGS. It was during the later half of the 1850s that enough demand finally existed for annual production of proofs for the fledgling American numismatic market. The success of the 1856 Flying Eagle cent prototype may have been partly responsible for the new wave of interest, but it wasn't until 1858 that the issuance of proofs began in earnest. An unknown, but obviously small mintage of proof dimes was released to collectors in 1857 and only a few dozens specimens are believed to survive. This brightly mirrored example is untoned and free from the lintmarks that are often found on this issue. Population: 8 in 64, 4 finer (7/07).Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 23CB, PCGS# 4746, Greysheet# 4210)
