Finest Known 1859 Superb Deep Cameo Proof Dime
1859 10C PR68 Deep Cameo NGC. As a leading numismatic auctioneer, we have to be careful that our own sales do not give us a false sense of the availability of certain coins. Take for example the proof 1859 Seated Dime. This is a genuinely rare issue with many of the 800 coins originally produced likely having been melted as unsold at year's end. Yet, this cataloger alone has had the privilege of describing several examples over the past couple of years. On the other hand, we can also testify to the fact that the typical proof 1859 Dime is rarely going to possess the technical merits and/or eye appeal of the present Superb Gem. The deeply mirrored fields leave little doubt about this coin's proof status. In contrast, the devices are well frosted. All areas present an essentially untoned appearance with only the slightest hint of golden color at the border areas.
