1859 'Transitional' Dime, PR64
Richly Toned, Deeply Mirrored

1859 10C Transitional, Judd-233, Pollock-280, High R.6, PR64 NGC. This "Coin Without a Country," the so-called 1859 "transitional" dime, was a creation of Mint Director James Ross Snowden who suggested muling a starred obverse die with the new reverse adopted in 1860, resulting in a coin that contained no mention of the United States. It is believed that fewer than two dozen are known. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. This is a fully struck example with brightly mirrored fields. Each side is covered with deep rose and steel-blue patina. Just the slightest contact marks can be located with the aid of a loupe. Exceptional quality overall.(Registry values: N1793)
