Description

1859 Transitional Dime Pattern, PR67
Judd-233, Ex: Lemus-Queller
Second-Finest Certified

1859 10C Transitional, Judd-233, Pollock-280, High R.6, PR67 NGC. A transitional pattern produced with a regular-issue dime obverse and a conceptual reverse die. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. Thirteen stars encircle the obverse periphery, with the date in exergue. ONE DIME sits within an ornate wreath of corn, wheat, maple, and oak on the reverse. Often referred to as the "stateless issue," the design lacks any reference to the country of origin. The Stars Obverse design appears on regular issue dimes minted from 1838 to 1859, while the Cereal Wreath reverse design appears on regular issue dimes minted from 1860 to 1891. This variety combines the two designs into a transitional pattern. Among specialists, the term "pattern" for this issue is debatable. The USPatterns.com website labels these items as fantasy pieces, while others prefer the use of "pattern" when describing the issue. In the end, Judd-233 is best described as a transitional piece. Distinctive toning near stars 11 through 13 on the obverse confirms this piece as the plate coin in Andrew Pollock's 1994 pattern treatise. Teal, blue, and gold toning dominate this Superb Gem proof. The strike is sharp and evenly distributed and the eye appeal is spectacular. Aggressive bidding is sure to ensue when this lot is called. NGC Census: 1 in PR67, 1 finer as a PR67★ Cameo.
