Description

1861 Dime, PR67 Cameo
Ex: Kaufman, Pleasing Peripheral Toning

1861 10C PR67 Cameo NGC. Fortin-101. Ex: Kaufman. Peripheral bands of ocean-blue and red-violet color this needle-sharp and boldly contrasted Superb Gem. A few dashes of aqua patina in the right obverse field must suffice as identifiers, since this remarkable proof is devoid of discernible contact.

Variety: Fortin-101, Type Two Obverse. The only proof variety for the date, attributed by a small, circular die defect on the M in DIME.

Population Data (3/15): This is the only PR67 Cameo coin at NGC although two in PR68 Cameo are finer. PCGS shows a single PR66 Cameo and none finer.

Heritage Commentary: The Mint struck 1,000 Seated dime proofs in 1861, all with the newly implemented Type Two obverse design. As many as 600 proofs went unsold, however, and were subsequently melted.

Provenance: Philip Kaufman Collection (Heritage, 5/2003), lot 5915; Greensboro Collection, Part I (Heritage, 10/2012), lot 3960.(Registry values: P1)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 23CK, PCGS# 84754, Greysheet# 4224)
