Amazing 1863 Seated Dime, PR66 Ultra Cameo

1863 10C PR66 Ultra Cameo NGC. CAC. Ex: Eliasberg. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, collectors did not concern themselves about the relative rarity of business strike and proof coins. Most collectors were happy to own an attractive proof example, thus business strikes were not saved. Such was the case with this issue, and the 14,000 business strikes were mostly hoarded and eventually lost over the years. An additional quantity of 460 proofs were produced in Philadelphia and these served the needs of collectors. This example is an amazing Premium Gem proof with brilliant silver surfaces and exceptional contrast. It has few peers in the numismatic world today. Census: 4 in 66 Ultra Cameo, 3 finer (10/10).
Ex: Charlotte Signature (Heritage, 3/2007), lot 481, which realized $6,325.
