Description

Collectible Proof 1864 Seated Dime

1864 10C --Improperly Cleaned--NCS. Proof. Probably dipped in the past, since the gray fields offer reduced reflectivity. Not offensively hairlined, however, and partly retoned in peripheral golden tones. This sharply struck Civil War proof Dime exhibits a wire rim on both sides. The obverse rim at 4 o'clock has a small mark. A mere 470 pieces were struck, along with just 11,000 business strikes. Philadelphia Mint issues had tiny mintages between 1863 and 1867, since silver coins were hoarded during those years. Their place in commerce was taken by Fractional Currency.(Registry values: N991)
