Description

Important Gem 1866 Deep Cameo Proof Dime

1866 10C PR65 Deep Cameo PCGS. Ahwash-2. A tiny dot at the bottom of the obverse shield between stripes 6 and 7 is the most easily identifiable diagnostic of this die marriage. Both business strikes and proofs of Ahwash-2 are known to exist. Only 725 proofs were struck of this scarce, Reconstruction-era dime. Brilliant in the centers with russet and blue color at the borders, the fields are very deeply mirrored with unfathomable reflectivity on each side with starkly contrasting devices. While a technical demerit in the right obverse field may keep this coin from an even higher grade, it certainly has the eye appeal of a coin that appears finer than the assigned PR65 grade.
