    1868 Dime, PR64 Cameo
    Misplaced Date Variety
    Ex: Eliasberg

1868 10C PR64 Cameo PCGS. CAC. F-105. Ex: Eliasberg. Stunning cameo contrast on this near-Gem reaches out to the observer. Soft orange-beige dominates the Liberty motif, wreath, and all the letters and date digits, all of which are further highlighted by the deeper hues of bluish-green in the fields. The design elements exhibit crisp detail, and an occasional wispy field hairline barely precludes a Gem classification. This piece displays outstanding eye appeal.

Variety: Fortin identifies two proof varieties. The present coin is Fortin-105, High R.4, high, level, blundered or misplaced date. The 1 digit is punched twice into the base directly above the final 18 digits. The full base and upright of the higher misplaced 1 is clearly visible below the end of the scroll. The left base of the second 1 digit is visible below the upper blundered digit. Fortin suggests a premium for this variety of 50%-100%.

Population Data (9/15): PCGS reports nine in PR64 (one PR64+) Cameo and 16 coins finer. NGC shows 14 in PR64 (one PR64 ★ ) Cameo and 13 finer. About one in five of the certified proofs at both services exhibit a cameo finish.

Heritage Commentary: The population figures indicate that while 1868 proof dimes can be obtained with patience, those with a cameo finish will require more diligent searching. This factor, along with a notable pedigree, CAC endorsement, and a rarer variety makes the present near-Gem Cameo proof a standout in the Gardner sale.
