Description

1891 Dime, Rim-Toned PR68
Near-Perfect Preservation

1891 10C PR68 NGC. CAC. Fortin-101. Sky-blue to cobalt-blue patina rings the rims on each side, melding into lavender, gold, and rose interiors. Rich luster complements surfaces that show virtually perfect preservation.

Variety: Fortin-101. Downward-sloping date, die scratch from shield line 2 to shield lines 3 and 4.

Population Data (3/15): NGC shows this PR68 and one PR68 example, along with one PR68 Cameo and two PR68 Cameo. PCGS shows none finer than PR67 in any contrast level.

Heritage Commentary: The 1891 proof and business-strike dimes rang down the longest-running coinage series in 19th century American numismatics. Many Americans lived and died having never seen a half dime, dime, quarter, half dollar, or silver dollar with a design other than the Liberty Seated motif. Its very ubiquitousness, nonetheless, today enables new die varieties to still be discovered.

Provenance: Purchased from U.S. Coin (12/2004). (Registry values: N4719)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 23DG, PCGS# 4788, Greysheet# 4316)

Weight: 2.49 grams
