    Description

    Uncommon PR58 1840 Seated Dollar
    Seldom Seen as a Proof

1840 $1 --Cleaned--PR58 ANACS. It is not known with certainty how many proof dollars were struck in 1840, but the generally accepted range is somewhere between 20 and 40 pieces. All are from the same die pairing. This is an unquestioned proof striking, even though it has its problems. The fields are deeply reflective as only a proof can be, quite unlike the semireflective business strikes from the 1840s. The surfaces show evidence of cleaning, and the coin appears to have spent a short amount of time in circulation (or someone's pocket), as evidenced by the "fuzzy" appearance seen in the fields and several contact marks on the obverse. Still, a very rare proof Seated dollar and seldom available in any condition.(Registry values: N1) (NGC ID# 24ZP, PCGS# 6981)
