Description

Elusive Proof 1844 Seated Dollar

1844 $1--Cleaned--ANACS. Net PR60. An elusive early proof striking from an unknown, but obviously very small number of specimens produced this year. The only reasonable estimate about the number believed extant today was Breen (1977) who believed 8-10 pieces may still exist. Proofs of 1844 can easily be distinguished from business strikes by the vertical shield stripes, each has three lines on proofs whereas business strikes display four. The gunmetal surfaces have subdued reflectivity and are noticeably mishandled, with a few scattered scratches and contact marks in the fields.
