Description
1844 Seated Dollar
PR64+ and CAC-Approved
Ex: Boyd-Carter-Queller-Gardner
1844 $1 PR64+ PCGS. CAC. OC-P1, High R.6.
Osburn-Cushing Die State a/a, as always. Peach and russet toning
dominate the obverse of this near-Gem, with some hints of electric
blue along the outside. This toning is limited to just splashes on
the reverse, exposing the natural silver color below. Strike is
strong, especially on the reverse wing feathers, although there is
some weakness on the top of the left wing and at the centers of
select stars.Only one die marriage of Liberty Seated dollar was produced in each format - business strike and proof. They are easily differentiated, as the proof die marriage has the date closer to the Bust than the dentils, where the opposite is true on the business strike die marriage. Furthermore, the right edge of the base of the 1 points to the right edge of a dentil on the proof, where it points to the left edge of a dentil on the business strike. The reverses are also easily told apart, with the business strike's reverse having a myriad of die lines both inside the vertical bars of the shield as well as between the eagle's head and left wing, which are not present on the proof reverse.
This proof is the finest certified at PCGS, and NGC only lists two finer: one 65 and one 66. Moreover, this is the only example that has earned a Plus designation by the former grading service, a rarity among early proof Seated dollars, with another from 1844, one from 1846, and one from 1849 as the only other examples from the decade. Population: 2 in 64 (2 in 64+), 0 finer. CAC: 2 in 64, 0 finer (10/24).
