Description

1848 Seated Liberty Dollar, PR64
Rare Early Proof, Condition Census Coin

1848 $1 PR64 NGC. OC-P1, High R.6. Osburn-Cushing Die State a/a. A single die pair was employed for all the circulation strikes (only 15,000 pieces struck) and a different die pair for the tiny 1848 proof mintage, estimated at 10 to 15 pieces. No proofs were struck from the circulation-strike dies. On the 1848 proof die marriage, the familiar 1840 PA reverse die was used -- seen on nearly all original proof issues from 1840 through 1854. Champagne-gold toning overlays the obverse and deepens somewhat across the reverse, although we note that the reflectivity of the underlying fields shines through forcefully. A sharp proof strike extends from top to bottom on both the obverse and the reverse. A few wispy, grade-defining hairlines hardly detract from this near-Gem proof's noteworthy rarity and memorable eye appeal. NGC Census: 5 in 64, 2 finer (6/25).
