Description

1848 Seated Dollar
Tied for Finest of Twelve Known, PR66
Bold Yellow and Orange Toning
Ex: Phil Kaufman-Greensboro

1848 $1 PR66 PCGS. OC-P1, High R.6. Osburn-Cushing Die State a/a, as always. On the obverse of this finest known example, rose and sage highlights underlie bold yellow and orange. On the reverse, rose and sage on the lower right transition into steel blue, with deeper areas above each wing and the head. The strike is first-rate, with well-detailed star centers and drapery folds, and the reverse even surpasses it, with every detail in the wing feathers razor sharp.

Only twelve proof Seated dollars are known for this year, one of which is permanently ensconced in the Smithsonian Institution. Only two of these coins enter Gem territory: the present PR66 PCGS example, and an NGC-certified coin of the same grade. Of these two, the current coin has long been considered the finest, it having previously resided in an NGC PR67 holder. The last opportunity to obtain an example in this lofty state of preservation was in 2015, so collectors who demand the finest should take advantage of this rare and important offering.
