Description

Important PR64 1850 Seated Dollar

1850 $1 PR64 PCGS. Breen-5443. An original struck from uncracked dies, the variety determined by the open 5 in the date and the repunching at the bottom of the last digit. The reverse has two small points protruding from the lowest line of the second A in AMERICA; while Breen's Encyclopedia claims that this feature has not been observed on originals, the Bowers reference Silver Dollars & Trade Dollars of the United States flatly contradicts Breen's observation. Empirical evidence from this proof supports Bowers, and what supports the eye appeal of this near-Gem proof is the vivid patina over strikingly mirrored surfaces. Blue-green and violet shadings dominate the obverse, while the reverse offers overt gold-orange hues. A handful of contact marks are visible in the fields. Housed in a green label holder.(Registry values: N7079)
