1851 Restrike Seated Dollar, PR62 Cameo
Strong Eye Appeal

1851 $1 Restrike PR62 Cameo NGC. The 1851 Seated dollars, whether Original or Restrike, occupy a coveted and desirable niche among the key issues within the series. The consensus is that all 1851 Original dollars were produced as business strikes, while all 1851 Restrike dollars were coined as proofs. The Original coins were recognized early on due to their low mintage of 1,300 pieces. It is thought that the Restrikes were produced around 1858-1860, and possibly again in 1867-1868, specially for favored dealers and collectors. Such Mint shenanigans were typical of the mid-19th century.

The Restrike 1851 silver dollars are distinguished from the Original strikes via the presence of a centered date, as opposed to the high date present on the Originals. This Restrike example displays readily apparent cameo contrast and a sharp strike, providing this coin with strong eye appeal. Both sides display hues of peach and teal toning, the colors more apparent on the reverse. Moderate hairlines contribute to the grade. Census: 1 in 62 Cameo, 3 finer (8/15).
