1851 Seated Dollar, PR62
Rare 1851 Restrike Proof

1851 $1 Restrike PR62 NGC. OC-P2, R.8. Ex: Richmond Collection. Osburn-Cushing Die State a/a. The 1851 Seated dollar is a challenging date in the series. A mere 1,300 circulation strikes were produced at a time when silver coins did not circulate and the price of silver was out of balance in its ratio to gold, which was abundant from California gold discoveries and other newly found gold deposits. These factors combine to make the 1851 a major key within the series.

The 1851 commercial strikes come from a die pair (OC-1) that features a high date that slants slightly downhill. Most examples show light die clashing beneath Liberty's arm. Coins claiming original proof status from the OC-1 dies are really misattributed restrikes from the three known proof restrike dies, or first-strike business strikes. It is clear some 50-100 restrike proofs were produced around 1858 or later to satisfy collector demand for this date -- most likely, shortly after the 1858 proofs were struck. A few of those restrike proofs -- such as the present OC-P2 example -- employ the proof reverse die from 1856 with diagnostic die lumps on S of STATES land L of DOL. At least two other restrike proof die pairs exist, each with the dates lower than the circulation strikes, employing different reverse dies.

The former Richmond Collection coin is a modestly mirrored example that displays light-champagne toning over each side. A few small contact marks are located in the fields, the most notable are seen to the right of Liberty's shin, another to the left of the eagle's beak, and a third below the left leg of the second A in AMERICA. This is an altogether lovely proof restrike from a rare die pair and a well-pedigreed example of the highly sought-after 1851 Seated dollar. NGC Census (all restrike proof varieties): 4 in 62, 9 finer (5/25).
