Description

1851 Seated Dollar, PR64
Important Restrike of a Fabled Issue

1851 $1 Restrike PR64 PCGS. OC-P4, High R.6. Matte-like silver surfaces are highlighted by pale champagne toning on each side. Strike is exquisite, and only a few hairlines and other tiny scratches keep this from Gem quality.

All documented 1851 Proof Seated dollars are restrikes, though it is possible that a few originals exist. The restrikes began appearing in the 1860s and are estimated to have been produced in 1858-60 and 1865-7. They were produced to satiate demand for date collectors, as Proof coins were the desired format at the time and 1851 Proof Originals either do not exist or are nearly unique.

These two striking periods resulted in three die marriages. The first, OC-P2, used the reverse found on 1856, 1857, and 1858 original proofs, and was likely made in late 1858 or early 1859. The second, OC-P3, used the reverse found on 1859 proofs, and was likely made in late 1859 or early 1860. The third, OC-P4, used a different obverse from the other two, paired it with the 1865 proof reverse die, and was likely made in late 1865 or early 1866. The present example hails from the latest of these die marriages, produced soon before the introduction of the With Motto design in 1866.
