Description

1852 Restrike Dollar, PR62
Radiant, Mostly Untoned Surfaces

1852 $1 Restrike PR62 PCGS. OC-P3, High R.5. Brilliant silver surfaces with significant Cameo contrast contain a slight sky-blue tinge on the obverse. Strike is exquisite, with the details of all 13 stars and every wing feather clad in perfect relief. Light, unidirectional abrasions exist on the surface, but none are individually distracting.

The 1852 proof dollar was originally struck in very limited quantities, as with most proof coins from the early 1850s. Only two of these Originals have been traced today by Osburn and Cushing. As coin collecting gained popularity in the late 1860s, so did demand for proof Seated dollars, as collectors in those days eschewed circulation strike examples in favor of proofs. this led to two confirmed restriking periods, with a third one proposed. The first of these, OC-2, used Reverse 1856 PA, and was probably made in late 1858 or early 1859 after the die was used for the Original proofs of 1856, 1857, and 1858. The second one, offered here, used Reverse 1859 PA, and was probably struck in late 1859 or early 1860, as it was not used for the Original proofs of 1860. The unconfirmed die marriage uses Reverse 1865 PA, and is posited to exist due to the 1851 restrikes that use this reverse die.(Registry values: N7079)
