Description
1852 Seated Dollar, PR62
Major Series Key
Sharp Proof Restrike
1852 $1 Restrike PR62 PCGS. OC-P3, High R.5. Osburn-Cushing
Die State a/a. The reverse die offers immediate confirmation of
this 1852 proof as a restrike. The die was previously used to
strike the regular 1859 proof Seated dollars, as well as restrike
proofs dated 1851, 1854, and 1858. Die lumps in the eagle's left
(facing) wing feathers are distinctive and easily confirm this
coin's proof restrike status, since the obverse die was used for
all 1852 die marriages -- proofs and circulation strikes. A thin
veil of reddish-gold patina provides extra eye appeal across the
nearly chromelike silver surfaces of this highly reflective
surfaces. The strike is needle-sharp. Dick Osburn's research
suggests a restrike proof mintage of about 65 pieces, with about 45
examples surviving today. Only a tiny number of 1852 proofs are
considered originals -- the vast majority are restrikes and still
highly sought for this rare Seated dollar date. PCGS Population: 4
