Description
1852 Restrike Dollar, PR63 CAC
Electric Blue Coin With Reverse of 1859
1852 $1 Restrike PR63 PCGS. CAC. OC-P3, High R.5. Ex: Amon
Carter. Osburn-Cushing Die State a/a, as always. The beautiful
golden-brown patina and abrasion-free surfaces are highlighted with
electric-blue and hints of grape. Strike is intricate, with
fully-detailed stars, hair, and superlative definition of the
eagle's feathers. A small mint-made strike-through atop the upper
arrow shaft provides a pedigree marker. The reverse is well
preserved, and the obverse field has only light and unimportant
hairlines. This proof is kindred spirits with the Carter 1851 Restrike dollar also in the present auction. Both coins use Reverse 1859 PA, corresponding to the OC-P3 die marriage of each date. They also sport consecutive serial numbers on their green holders and have the same pedigree chain stretching back to the Amon Carter sale in 1984. Presumably they have been held together for generations.
This is only fitting, as 1851 and 1852 Seated dollars also have much in common. Both have extremely low business strike mintages, at just 1,300 and 1,100 pieces, respectively, making them the unchallenged key dates to the No Motto Seated dollar series. They were also both restruck at three different points with three different reverse dies: reverse 1856 PA (struck around late 1858 or early 1859, according to Osburn-Cushing), reverse 1859 PA (struck around late 1859 or early 1860), and reverse 1865 PA (struck in mid to late-1865). However, one difference between these two dates is that proof originals are only known for 1852. According to Osburn-Cushing, approximately three 1852 originals exist, identified by their use of Reverse 1840 PA, which struck proof originals for all dates from 1840 through 1854 except for 1851 and 1853.
