Description

Desirable Select 1852 Restrike Silver Dollar From The Amon G. Carter, Jr. Estate

1852 $1 Restrike PR63 PCGS. The beautiful golden-brown and electric-blue patina throughout the margins is similar in pattern to the Carter 1851 Restrike Dollar also in the present auction. Certified in green label holders with consecutive serial numbers, both pieces have presumably been held together for generations. This is only fitting, since the 1851 and 1852 Seated Dollars have much in common. Both have extremely low business strikes for Philadelphia Mint dates, just 1,300 and 1,100 pieces, respectively. They are the unchallenged key dates to the No Motto Seated Dollar series.
One difference between the 1851 and 1852 Silver Dollars is the ease of distinguishing originals from restrikes. For the 1851, the date location is definitive. However, all 1852 Seated Dollars share the same obverse die, which makes identification of restrikes more difficult. Given the rarity of original pre-1858 proofs, it is likely that the majority of proof 1852 Silver Dollars are restrikes. The reverse of the present piece is from the same die as the Carter 1851 Restrike earlier offered, identified by a faint raised line on the second S in STATES. A small mint-made strike-thru atop the upper arrow shaft provides a pedigree marker. Fully struck, the reverse is well preserved, and the obverse field has only light and unimportant hairlines. An important opportunity for the specialist.
