Seldom-Seen 1852 Seated Dollar
PR64 Restrike
1852 $1 Restrike PR64 NGC. The 1852 Seated dollar issue is,
along with the 1851 and 1858, one of the "Big Three" in the series.
Only 1,100 business strikes were produced in the original format,
along with perhaps 15 to 30 proof originals and 45 to 90 restrikes,
according to estimates in Q. David Bowers' various silver dollar
references. The Bowers-Borckardt Silver Dollar Encyclopedia
comments concerning the restrikes:"As business strikes of the 1852 dollar were recognized as rarities at an early date, the 'Midnight Minters' set about restriking Proofs of these coins, probably as early as 1858 and until mid-1860, when Director James Ross Snowden seized the dies and sealed them in a carton. When Director Henry Richard Linderman opened the carton in 1867, more may have been restruck. Several reverse die varieties exist, suggesting restriking on different occasions."
Breen and Bowers both estimate that 90% of existing proofs are restrikes, with at least three reverse dies known. This piece is certified as a Restrike by NGC, showing profoundly flashy fields. The centers are brilliant but slightly hazy, contrasting with margins ringed by deep gray-blue toning. The strike is soft on the stars and head of Liberty and on the lower reverse, the leaves, claw, and branch. Some contrast appears on each side, along with some wispy field hairlines.
