Description

    Underrated 1853 Restrike
    'Novodel' Seated Dollar, PR61

1853 $1 Restrike PR61 PCGS. So far as is known, no original proofs were struck in 1853 of the Seated dollar, although for collectors' sakes the situation was apparently rectified a decade later, when perhaps a dozen restrike proofs were made either from a new obverse die or one previously unused. As here, the obverse of all these restrikes shows diagonal, raised file marks just below Liberty's rock, beginning at the 8 and continuing to the right side of the 3. The obverse also shows a combination of raised die lines in the fields and many short hairline scrapes, most prominent on Liberty's thighs, shield, and foot. Notable strike softness appears on the reverse, especially on the eagle's left (facing) wing and neck feathers.

The 1853 proof dollars are extremely rare, even though they are likely underrated due to the broad availability of business strikes of this year. The proof 1853s are also overshadowed by the Seated dollar issues of 1851 and 1852, which are rare in any grade. The Bowers Buyer's Guide to the series calls the 1853 restrikes "novodels" due to the absence of known originals. Population: 2 in 61, 3 finer (2/13).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 2527, PCGS# 6996)
