Description

1854 Seated Dollar, PR53
Key Series Date, Scarce Proof Restrike

1854 $1 PR53 ANACS. OC-P3, R.7. Osburn-Cushing Die State a/a. A Top 30 Variety. Struck from confirmed proof dies, with remnants of two misplaced digits near the date. One of the digits is entered too high, just under the rock base between 5 and 4, while the other sits atop the dentils beneath the primary 4. In circulation strike format, the 1854 is a key Seated dollar date. Proofs are rarer still, with fewer than a half dozen original proofs known. An additional 75 or so proof restrikes were issued at various later dates -- of which perhaps half that number survive. This is a briefly circulated proof, sharply struck, with scattered small marks and an oblong planchet flaw on Liberty's leg near the upper-right shield corner. Golden-tan toning deepens to deep blue at the margins.(Registry values: N1)
