Description

1854 Seated Liberty Dollar, PR62
OC-P2, Misplaced Digits Restrike

1854 $1 PR62 PCGS. OC-P2, Low R.6. There are three die varieties known for the proof 1854 Seated Liberty silver dollars. This is perhaps surprising given the relatively low production, although original proofs and restrikes were produced. The discussion about 1854 proof dollars at www.seateddollarvarieties.com is highly informative.

The present piece represents the OC-P2 die combination that is the usual variety seen among 1854 proof Seated dollars. These coins use a reverse die that was first used on 1859 proof dollars, and then used on the 1854 proofs, suggesting that these pieces were coined about 1860.

Delicate champagne and blue toning appears on the fully mirrored fields that surround the lustrous devices of this lovely piece. Both sides exhibit bold details aside from slight weakness at the top of the right (left facing) wing. Minor reverse hairlines limit the grade of this attractive proof dollar. Population: 3 in 62, 13 finer (2/18).
