Description

1854 Silver Dollar, PR62
Challenging Proof Date

1854 $1 PR62 PCGS. OC-P3, R.7. Osburn and Cushing state OC-P3 is a Top 30 Variety, due to the misplaced date digit (the top of a 4) centered above the 54 in the date. The authors estimate only 10 survivors of the variety, and fewer than 50 proofs overall (including OC-P1 and OC-P2) for the date. OC-P2 and OC-P3 are considered restrikes from circa 1859, during an era when the Philadelphia Mint produced many proof restrikes from half cents to patterns. This is a sharply struck specimen with attractive light powder-blue and lilac-gray toning. A small spot above the D in UNITED allows future identification.
