Appealing PR64 1854 Seated Dollar

1854 $1 PR64 PCGS. CAC. While there are no recorded mintage figures for proof 1854 Seated dollars--as is the case for most pre-1858 proof coins--Walter Breen's Proof Encyclopedia in 1987 estimated a "couple of dozen survivors." NGC and PCGS together have certified 37 pieces, but those figures likely represent only 20 or so different examples.
Breen also notes a "triangular defect at base, above and r. of 5, possibly serif of a misplaced 4?" On this example the diagnostic stray punch is clear up and to the right of the 5. This piece displays none of the roller marks or planchet adjustment marks that are often seen on this issue, most notably on the Phil Kaufman coin (Heritage, 8/2007, lot 1792). The centers are significantly lighter than the peripheries, with shades of rose-blue moving outward, deepening to cobalt-blue at the rims. The bright, mirrorlike fields flash strongly through the toning. This is an appealing piece, high-end for a PR64 coin. Population: 4 in 64, 0 finer (4/09). NGC has certified seven coins in 64, with two finer.(Registry values: N7079)
