Near-Gem Proof 1855 Seated Liberty Dollar

1855 $1 PR64 PCGS. In the mid-1850s, beginning with 1854, survival of Proof Seated Dollars seems to have increased from former years. Like previous years, the number of survivors is not specifically known, and is subject to debate. Walter Breen suggested that 50 to 60 examples still exist, while Dave Bowers felt the actual number of survivors is much smaller, in the range of 20 to 30 coins. Current research suggests that the actual number of pieces known today is more in line with the thoughts of Breen on this matter. To date, PCGS and NGC have certified 34 Proof examples of this date in various grades from PR61 to PR66. In the past 30 years, a large number of Proof Seated Liberty Silver Dollars have come into the market place from major long-time holdings. These include the collections of Pittman, Norweb, Eliasberg, Garrett, Starr, Stack, and others. During this same period of time, and especially since the advent of third-party certification in 1986, many other examples have also turned up. Since these and other major collections have been sold, many of these coins have made repeated appearances in public auctions over the years. As a result, pedigree tracking is extremely difficult. Some coins are cleaned and recertified at different grade levels, obscuring pedigree markers that were formerly present. Exact survival numbers are difficult to pin-point today.
This Choice Proof example is fully brilliant on both sides, with deeply mirrored fields. The devices are satiny with proof finish as well, thus there is little cameo contrast. A tiny dark spot below the left base of the final A in AMERICA will serve as a pedigree marker. This is a splendid example that will certainly please the connoisseur. Population: 8 in 64, 4 finer (10/05).
