Description

PCGS 1855 PR 63. Somewhere between 40 and 75 proofs were struck of this year, a tiny mintage to be sure, but this date is actually rarer than even that mintage would indicate. Breen estimates that some 50 to 60 proofs survive, but Bowers believes the number to be significantly lower because of the number of deceptively deep mirrored prooflikes known of this date. This is an attractive proof dollar that has more eye appeal than its grade might indicate. The fields are deeply mirrored and both sides show a rich golden-rose toning in the centers with blue margins around the rims. There are a few hairlines in the fields, greatly subdued by the toning, and no mentionable marks on either side. This is certainly one of the silver highlights in this splendid auction. Population: 1 in 63, 5 finer. (NGC ID# 2529, PCGS# 6998)

    Weight: 26.73 grams

    Metal: 90% Silver, 10% Copper
