    Stunning 1856 Proof Seated Dollar

1856 PR 66 NGC. Although the exact number of proofs struck in 1856 is not known, it is generally believed that somewhere between 60 and 125 pieces were originally produced. Of that number, Walter Breen stated that probably 40 or so proofs might still be extant today. This piece shows the diagnostic die lines in the field above ITE of UNITED on the reverse. This is an absolutely stunning proof dollar. No apologies need to be made about early mint machinery and no explanations have to be given about carelessness in the mint. The production quality of this coin is comparable to anything produced forty years later. The fields show an illimitable depth of mirrored reflectivity, and the devices are lightly frosted, yielding a light cameo contrast. Medium russet toning is accented with hints of bright-blue at the borders. Exceptional quality and rarity. This is the singular finest example thus far graded by either service (7/97). (NGC ID# 252A, PCGS# 6999)

Another major house refused the work stating it was too unique for the artist. Heritage saw that as an advantage!
