    Description

    Rare Proof 1856 Seated Dollar

1856 $1 PR64 PCGS. The 1856 dollar is very rarely encountered, as are all pre-1858 proofs. Only a couple of dozen have survived today in all grades. It is not known how many proof dollars were struck in this year, but it appears that no more than a couple of dozen survive today. This coin "carries its own credentials" as Walter Breen used to say. However, it also shows the diagnostic die lines in the field above ITE in UNITED on the reverse that are seen on all proof dollars from this year. The fields are deeply mirrored and the surfaces are brilliant with bright steel-gray surfaces. Lightly hairlined, the only readily visible flaw on this important coin is a light planchet streak above and to the left of the eagle's head on the reverse. Fully detailed in all areas. Population: 9 in 64, 1 finer (6/01). (NGC ID# 252A, PCGS# 6999)
