Description

1857 Seated Dollar, PR65
Beautifully Toned CAC Coin

1857 $1 PR65 PCGS. CAC. OC-P1, R.5. Osburn-Cushing Die State a/a. This remarkable Gem proof 1857 Seated Liberty dollar first appeared in our auctions in 2013, as the crown-sized coin in a wonderful 1857 proof set that was offered as individual lots. The hazy blue surfaces show an underlying reddish tint, and the mirrored flash is partially subdued, but when angled just so beneath a light the proof finish flashes forth. Sharply struck throughout with no obvious contact marks. Mintage estimates are at least 50 pieces and range upward to 100 proofs for the unrecorded 1857 production. What is telling are the number (or lack thereof) of high-grade examples. In Gem, any example is a rarity, and barely a handful carry CAC endorsement. PCGS Population: 5 in 65 (1 in 65+), 1 finer (12/25).
