Description
1858 Seated Liberty Dollar, PR62
In-Demand Proof-Only Issue
1858 $1 PR62 PCGS. The 1858 Seated Liberty dollar is a
famous proof-only issue with no officially recorded mintage
figures. Since coin collecting became widespread in this country
about the time these coins were struck, the 1858 has been the
subject of great collector demand since the time of issue. The
Chapman brothers quoted unnamed sources at the Mint as saying only
80 examples were struck in 1858, but the surviving population
suggests a larger number must have been produced at some point. It
is possible that restrikes were made in the 1859-1860 time frame,
or possibly later. The 2016 Guide Book gives an estimated
production total of 300 examples all told. The present coin is an attractive PR62 specimen with sharply detailed design elements and reflective fields, under shades of medium-intensity golden-brown toning. A few minor contact marks and hairlines are evident, but none are individually distracting. Population: 29 in 62, 43 finer (11/15).(Registry values: N4719)
